Ideas on Album Covers

This is the original version that Ronnie drew from an inspirational picture of the internet.

There are our primary sources that we are going to use on our CD cover. This is the original version.
Once Ronnie had drawn the picture above, then she took a pictures of it and after that she put different effects on the picture as seen above. We decided this picture for our music album cover because it follows the research that we have undertaken on Sirens.
The next steps of this process is to put the image onto an iMac so then we can photoshop (edit) it how we want it to look like and also make it appropriate for a CD album cover.

Shannon took the photo of this picture (on the right) when we
found it then she put an effect on
it. The bottom half of the picture was cut off because then only the beautiful creature is showing. We did this because it shows that the band only has a good side by writing brilliant music with creative lyrics to go with.

This screen shot on the left is an initial idea for the title of the CD cover that we are in process of making whilst doing the Research and Planning as well as filming for our music video.

Similarly to the picture of the Siren, Ronnie has hand drawn the written and then she transported it onto Photoshop so we could edit it to how we want it to look like.

However the picture on the right is the edited version.
Whilst on the photoshop, we decided that we don't want to have the paper background on the CD cover and thus, we have used the "eraser tool" and erased all the background, until it was all left with no paper.
The writing is now a rough effect with mysterious look which also goes well with the theme of Sirens.

E-mails

This is a screen shot of a e-mail conversation between us and one of the band members (Hannah) as we contacted her to find out more information about the meaning behind their band name, Sound of the Sirens.

Relating Sirens to Different Movies

The pictures above is of the film Little Mermaid. I have posted these because I feel that it links in with my research with the Sirens. However, Ariel shows the nice side of these creatures and even though there she is a Mermaids they are still part of the family with Sirens.

These pictures are from the film Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

The two shots below are from the film are show perfectly the two different side to the mermaids/sirens the good side then the evil.

A young, beautiful girl to bring the men into the water/

The shot above is showing when they get them into the water how they turn evil and drown the man. In my eyes, the colour yellow represents joy and happiness and maybe something to look forward. This would only be in the eyes of the mermaids since the man getting killing would feel scared, worried and would panic and this would be represented by the colour of red or navy blue. I think that she has a sparkle and yellow because she is getting what she wants and is showing her power and dominance towards the man that she is killing.

The two pictures above illustrates that not all Sirens/Mermaids are evil and aim to kill. Syrena is turns out to be the kind, gentle mermaid in the film out falls in love with Philip (left picture) played by Sam Claflin. The shot on the right is showing her vulnerability, calmness and also shows how soft she is. Her body language is closed to show that no one will touch her and her face shows that she is slightly frightened, worried and as well as calling out for help.

However in 2003, the film of Peter Pan starring Jeremy Sumpter, Rachel Hurd-Wood and Jason Isaacs it showed only the evil side of the Sirens.

The shot on the right is showing one of the sirens pulling 'Wendy' into the water.
The close-up of this shot is very effective because it shows the big details in the shot. For example the web in between the fingers, the long nails and also the finger going into the water at the bottom of the shot. It all gives the audience the sense of who they are and what they are about to do.

With the shot on the right, is this where Peter saved Wendy from getting drowned in the water and the Sirens reaction of that. It is showing that she isn't happy/impression since she didn't finish her mission of killing her.

The mid-shot above is showing the main details
that need to be addressed:
her hair, hands, face features and expressions.
All these aspects in the shot will give details to
the audience and it will demonstrates what is
happening in the shot.

We researched Sirens in different films as it is the best way to see how they are seen in different ways. This helps us to see the good and the evil side to Sirens/ Mermaids. We are going to use this research to help us create a album cover which will appeal to the audience whilst staying with the disjuncture film.

Information about Sirens

Sound of the Sirens

We researched Sirens because it link in with the name of the band and we wanted to know the details of the Sirens and why the band chose that name.

An idea that we had is to use a picture of a Siren(s) for the album cover. It doesnt fit the genre but it links with the name and also carrys on our disjuncture them.
Also, the actual idea of Sirens having two sides to themselves makes us think that the song we are using has two sides to it.

In Greek mythology, Sirens were very dangerous but beautiful creatures, portrayed as femma fatales (mysterious and seductive woman) who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island.

When the Sirens were given the name of their own, they were considered the daughters of the river god Achelous. He  was the patron deity of the "'silver-swirling' Achelous River, which is actually the largest river of Greece.

However, the Roman wrote linked the Sirens more closely to the sea, as daughters of Phorcys. This God was hidden in the dangerous depts of the sea.

The picture above shows the two different sides to the Sirens. The girl on the rock is the beautiful side to lure the sailors in and then her reflection shows her real side when it comes to killing the men on the boat.

Final Storyboard

Prezi - Information on Actors and Performers

Ronnie created this Prezi to show the all the elements that we are going to include to the music video. Its include the Performers informationa as well as the Actors that will be involved.
There is some general information about the ages and how it links in with the conventions to the genre of folk music. Since doing our Audience Research, we found out that more younger people prefer folk/acouistic music than older people in general.
One of the slide is about costume and looks, how the colours that they wear reflects the genre and again show the conventions of the genre because it is light, girly but flexible and easy to move in.

Impressions of Folk Genre - Apperance

All four video above are from Sound of the Sirens, I am mainly looking at the clothes that they are wearing to give us inspirations for our video. The song that we are creating a video for is the same band as above. I have chosen these videos because it gives us all an idea on costume and apparenrce for the video that we are going to shoot next week.

Acoustic Genre

  • Acoustic music mainly uses instruments to create its sound in a very simple and un-compromised way, compared to the use of electronics to improve the sound.
  • People who play acoustic music often increase the volume of their output using 'electronic amplifies'.
  • Often a microphone is placed in front of an acoustic instrument which is then wired up to an amplifier.

Filming days - our plan

Wednesday 6th November
  • The plan is to film the actually performance which is going to be in the music video. The performers, Tabitha and Ronnie will be performing in the drama studio.
  • They will be wearing their folk style costume and handling their guritars and singing into mics which will be on stands.

Friday 8th November
  • In the morning, we are going to Shillingthorpe woods, near Peterbouorgh  to film to fields and woods scene that will also be a part of the narrative.
  • Also, we will be going to film another piece of the narrative where we will be filming the couple arguing. This will take place in the living room, kitchen and this will show the reality within the video.
  • We will finish filming in the woods around 4o'clock.
  • After filming Shannon, Ronnie and I will go back to my house, North of Peterborough and then this will give us time to set up for the male actor, Chris arrival at 4:30/5o'clock.
  • We plan to finish in 7o'clock in the evening.

Basic/First Ideas - Storyboard

New Idea

I have just had the idea of when the video begins, as well as the stop motion effect with the pictures telling the story but as well putting it in a cartoon effect. This will show the difference between her two 'lives' however, when she then enters the door the video will turn into the original plan which was just video footage with no effects.

Extra Ideas For Promo

I just thought of an idea which will link in with the theme of the video, freedom. There is going to be a shot of a firework explosion and it will be placed at the end of the video as I walk out of the concert onto a field, then I will look up and fireworks will appear in the shot. After the spark have fallen, the shot will fade and end. When the spark do fall it represents calmness and peace in her life since he has finally gone.

The video above is showing our ideas with the fireworks exploding and also the sparks falling.

Katy Perry's video is a great example of expressing yourself and being your own person not someone your not.

Shot List

Shot list is helpful to producers, directors creating a music video.
  • The red writing is sound
  • The blue writing is the pictures that we will be taking to look like stop motion
  • Finally, the black writing is going to be the footage.
  • Other things
  • Improvements

Start
  • Long shot of the two performers on stage setting up with their guitars. This will set the scene for the performance and give an idea of genre.
  • From the long shot, pan around to the side of them. We will show the audience half way through panning fully - mid shot.
  • Close- up of Tabby and Ronnie (hands on guitars and faces)
  • Performers point of view shot of the audience - Actors (looking down from stage)
  • We were think about getting an audience to watch and to get a shot of them scream showing that they are enjoying themselves and can't wait for Sound of the Sirens to begin playing.
  • High angle shot from the feet - guitar then zooms into the picture which will be on the guitar.
  • From the last picture of the performers - it slowly zooms out to mid shot (and we are going to put an effect in it to show the transition between and performance to the narrative and showing both performers).
  • Burst effect of pictures of couples in their house.
  • The two characters are going to act like a couple but the man does something that annoys the women off and she storm off - The camera zooms to mid shot of shouting at each other.
  • But before she leaves the room she look back at him like to say 'im done with you'.
  • There is going to be a long shot for when the camera follows the female actor upstairs into her bedroom.
  • Before she enters the room, she takes a breath, places her hand on the door handle (close-up) and step in.

  • A mid shot (panning) a girl in a random field with different clothes (dress and sandals)
  • The camera will then slowly zooms out as she looks around and smiles with a sigh of relief
The above is going to be very quick stop motion.

  • The music will begin as soon as she is in the field and the shot will go to performers playing and singing the first line of the song.
  • Goes back to long shot of actor running through the field, spinning and laughing.
  • Goes to performers on 'I only went out last night...' shot of one performers then to both then to the other as well as shots of playing the guitars.
  • Back to actor going into woods then out where sees friends (the two performer).
  • Shots of actor having fun with her friends, laughing while having a drink.
  • Flash backs (pictures and videos) of times with her boyfriend.
  • Goes through the town which links to the park.
  • Different types of shots of their performers playing/singing.
  • Actor goes back to house.
  • As she goes through door it goes she return to the concert on her own knowing it was only a memory.
  • She will have 'The End' on her lips (smiling)

Narrative and Performance

The screen shot above is a guide that we are going to stick to on the days of shooting the music video. It is showing the place where the narrative or performance is going to be in the video. This will make it clear to us when and where each bit will be placed.

Experiments

We took a lesson out last week to take pictures and create different videos to show some ideas that we have for our promo.

Main Idea For Promo

  • The screenshot above are the basic ideas that we have for the music video. This shot below are ideas for the middle section when I (the actor in the video) and the performers (Tabitha and Ronnie) meet and be together.

Technology

Above is a prezi that Ronnie made to show the techonolgy that we are going to use for our music promo.

Locations

The picture on the right is showing another idea for the field that we are going to use the our promo.
When I see the picture, it gives me the sense of freedom and in a way realisation. There is nothing there apart from grass, trees, sunlight and

This is an example of the field that we are going to use in our music video.
The field is going to appear when the girl in the video goes onto a wardrobe/door and is s where is ends up on the other side.
We picked this kind of environment because its light, airy and gives the sense of freedom.

Practice Ideas For Promo

This type of picture is going to show the audience how close the couple are before they started fighting

So it begins...

Trying to keep a straight face

The pictures above are examples of what we are going to do in our music video. The stills are there to suggest that people do argue and do fight within relationships and I also wanted to show the transition between love and hate in a relationship.

Another attempt

Try to focus...

Ronnie turns...

Couldn't help ourselves - so funny

These photos above (12) are another trail for the photos. Obviously in the actual video, there will be a lot more photos with more detail. The photos are just evidence that we have trailed stills for our video.

THE END

These two picture are going to be the ending shots for our music video. We have chosen black and white instead of colour because we feel that it is going to be more effective for the audience and lets us show more emotion throughout the video. Also, the black and white effect could suggest that she is living in a plain, dull life which she want to escape from, which she does but then she could feel empty and alone because no one is there for her at the end of the song.
