Music Video History

How times have changed in the music industry

technology, graphics, production and the music

1960s - THE BEATLES

The video above is The Beatles single, A hard day's night. It was released on the 10 July 1964. The first 10 seconds is only the audience reaction of the band. This suggest how popular the band were back in the 1960s and also show us, the viewers, that the band were playing live which shooting the music video.
Even though it was made in the 1960s, the video itself is great because it reflects the band status with their fans and also shows how things could go wrong on stage and reflects real life and how things can go wrong so easily but easy to get back on track. For example 1 minute, 21 seconds when the old man comes up from underneath the stage and Paul and George kick him off but the band carry on and put on as great performance for their audience watching.
The camera is very interesting in this music video. It seems when the band are in the stage, the camera is very steady and calm but while the camera is on the audience, the camera pans and never seems to stop. This could reflect the wildness of the audience because how they are reacting to the band.

1970s -QUEEN

Bohemian Rhapsody was released on 31 October 1975. The video imcluded the band in union which sould suggest the equality between the 4 members in the band.

Then it goes into the band playing live with Freddie Mercury on the keyboard and miming to the song. Since it was in the 1970s and tthe technology wasn't as advanced as it is today, to the viewers watching, it is obvious that Mercury was miming to the song instead of singing live. His lips and and music were not 100% synced to the song. But with John Deacon in the background, playing the guitar creates more of an atmosphere for their audience since it isn't just Mercury just sitting there playing. The atmosphere must feel more like a performance.

After Mercury and Deacon after finish their little performance on the guitar and keyboard, Roger Taylor get introduced playing his instrument (drums) and bring the beat into the song. continues....

Looking back 40 + years, we tell how technologyy has changed and improved over the years.

The Clash were an English punk rock band that formed in 1976 and the song 'Should I stay or should I go now is from their album Combat Rock. The song was writen in 1981 and it became the band's only number-one single on the UK singles charts after a decade of its originally released.

 2010s - ONE DIRECTION

This song was relaesed in late 2012 and eventhough this song was written by Ed Sheeran and Fiona Bevan, it still has over 126 million views on Youtube. This is because od 1D huge success worldwide.

The videos itself is the same pace as the as the song. What I mean by this is the pace of the song is slow and calm compared other One Direction song. It's easy to follow and as an audience you feel perhaps like they can related to it and understnd what the lads are suggesting he the song.

They can give an convincing performacne and this is key to be a great performer or in this case performers.

  1. Laura - you've got some good examples of promos throught the ages here - but you need to put some more text on to give a bit of a commentary on how the promo has developed over the years. Use the powerpoint we studied in class for guidance. The section on The Beatles is what you should aim for - maybe a little briefer. The work on intertextuality is good!
