Conventions of Music Promos

There are four basic conventions that all people involved with media know and they are camera work, editing, mise-en-scene and the story itself known as the narrative.

Below, are some examples and explanations of the four different conventions.
Camera work -
In a music video, depending on the genre

Generally close up instruments
& showing how well the band can play (sense of realism), close, up and personal with the video
tracking shots – more exciting,
panning
low angle shots
all band members in the shots

Editing –
Straight cuts
Pace – interested
Transitions – being adventurous and new
Make the audience make it watch more than once

Mise-en-scene -
Performing (band) and the story itself
Props – instruments
Costume – important à genre
Actors/band – to tell the story

Narrative –
A substory that illustrates the lyrics – genre
Showing the instruments vocals/band
