P!NK - So What Lyrics, Official Video and Why?

OUR CHOSEN MUSIC VIDEO FOR OUR PRELIMINARY VIDEO - A LEVEL

P!NK

"So What"

Na na na na na na na na na na na na [x2]
I guess I just lost my husband,
I don't know where he went,
So I'm gonna drink my money,
I'm not gonna pay his rent,
I got a brand new attitude and
I'm gonna wear it tonight,
I wanna get in trouble,
I wanna start a fight,
na na na na na na na I wanna start a fight,
na na na na na na na I wanna start a fight.

So, so what
I'm still a rock star,
I got my rock moves,
And I don't need you,
And guess what,
I'm having more fun,
And now that we’re done,
I'm gonna show you tonight,
I'm alright,
I'm just fine,
And you're a tool,
So, so what,
I am a rock star,
I got my rock moves,
And I don't want you tonight.

(Uh check my flow, aw)
The waiter just took my table,
And gave it to Jessica Simps (shit!),
I guess I'll go sit with drum boy,
At least he'll know how to hit,
What if this song's on the radio,
then somebody's gonna die,
I'm gonna get in trouble,
My ex will start a fight,
na na na na na na na he's gonna start a fight,
na na na na na na na we're all gonna get in a fight!

So, so what
I'm still a rock star,
I got my rock moves,
And I don't need you,
And guess what,
I'm having more fun,
And now that we’re done,
I'm gonna show you tonight,
I'm alright,
I'm just fine,
And you're a tool,
So, so what,
I am a rock star,
I got my rock moves,
And I don't want you tonight

You weren't there,
You never were,
You want it all,
But that's not fair,
I gave you life,
I gave my all,
You weren't there,
You let me fall.

So, so what
I'm still a rock star,
I got my rock moves,
And I don't need you,
And guess what,
I'm having more fun,
And now that we’re done,
I'm gonna show you tonight,
I'm alright,
I'm just fine,
And you're a tool,
So, so what,
I am a rock star,
I got my rock moves,
And I don't want you tonight

No, no, no, no
I don't want you tonight,
You weren't there,
I'm gonna show you tonight,
I'm alright,
And you're a tool,
And your a tool,
So, so what,
I am a rock star,
I got my rock moves,
And I don't want you tonight!

WHY DID WE CHOOSE P!NK's song, SO WHAT FOR OUR PRELIM VIDEO?

There were so many opinions we had for our prelim music video. After some time researching 3 of our own favourite artists and genres, we then narrowed them down to one each then looked further into the meaning of each song. In the end we chose P!nk because we felt that she always tells the truth through her music along with a huge attitude. This help with her genre of music, pop punk and also helps her stand out from most artists.
The next steps was to pick a song from her playlist. We chose 'So What' because its loud, honest and fun. I think we took a risk with doing this since we decide to use different children's cartoon films to illustrate the lyrics that P!nk was saying. The great thing about using different elements the children's cartoon is the variety of shots that what got throughout our promo. From panning to close-up to the Ken Burn effect. This all helped created interest for our target audience.

Another element that we enjoyed this single is the pace of the song. It's not slow and perhaps boring neither so fast where the audience may not understand the song nor the story that is being portrayed

Overall, we used P!nk's single, So What because it tells a true story along with still being fun, energetic and puts her story across.

Conventions of a Music Promo

 Conventions of music promos

Concepts in Music Promos – similar in adverts

ILLUSTRATION – the promo basically illustrates the ideas / narrative in the song lyrics.

AMPLIFICATION - the promo uses a key idea / image from the lyrics and develops it.

DISJUNCTURE – the promo bears no resemblance to the lyrics or its meaning;  often seen as unconventional / ‘arty’ videos.

Examples

Oasis - Cigarettes and Alcohol

Different Types of Music Videos

The video above is from Blink 182 and the song is about a guy that is afraid of messing up on his date, so he takes all possible precautions and wants more time so he can get ready than he already is for his first date with this girl.

Excited 'just can't wait to pick you up on our very first date'
Nervous &Anxious 'is it cool if I hold your hand' & 'would you guess that I didn't know what to wear'

The video tells a story about a average guy's different emotions before his first date. However, in my opinion, I don't think that the lyrics link in very well with the video. This is because the lyrics say how nervous but excited he is for his first date yet the video has women wearing their bikinis and this suggests that they aren't focusing on that one girl, but many. The video just shows the boys in the band enjoying their lives not showing how they feel.
Perhaps the video has a different meaning behind the lyrics and want the audience to have their own opinion on it.

The original music video for Ed Sheeran's Lego House is pretty good in the way that it has been put together especially because Ed Sheeran actually isn't in it until 3:31 into the video. The actor, Rupert Grint plays the obsessive stalker who love Sheeran that much that he wants to be like him.

The person who animated the video, Dylan Woodley, has really cleverly put this together because the lego version is so precise to the original video. The video itself is impressive.

This video has over 4 500 000views on YouTube and over 60 000 likes - IT'S A HIT!

The video above is from Junior Senior called 'Meet Your Feet' and it is all about having fun and uniting with people. Getting together and having a good time. It is very different to most video that people see but then again it stands out from other video as would and it is well recognised to the public as it has over 4 500 000 views on YouTube.

Using paint or some sort of animation to shoot a video perhaps suggest a sense of childishness. Also, since the character are all cartoon figures this also backs up my point of being child like and perhaps for the child audience. However, you could look at another side to the video and say how fun and upbeat it is for the audience to view.

Intertextuality

Intertextuality

References (visual, mise-en-scene, camerawork...) to media texts - e.g. TV programmes, films, adverts...

Idea/images borrowed and repackaged from their texts

Can be used for humorous of serious effect

Privileges part of the audience - they're 'in on the joke' - but text can still be understood by others unaware of intertextual references.

Theory

John Stuart believes the music promo 'incorporates, raids and reconstructs'

Julia Kristeva 'any text is the absorption and transformation of another'

Research and explain the intertextual links.
Which text had been used? Why?

Even from the beginning, one of Madonna's influences was Marilyn Monroe:

Before Madonna even got popular with her music, she looked up to to Monroe. Monroe was stunning, popular and talented so of course Madonna wanted to be like her.

In Madonna's video, 'Material Girl', the audience can obviously see that she has copied what Monroe was wearing in her video 'Gentleman Prefer Blondes'.
Also, both videos include the female being touched and looked at by several man suggesting that Madonna looked up to Marilyn Monroe and wanted to be like her and to live her lifestyle.

MARILYN & MADONNA
The picture above shows Marilyn and Madonna in pretty much the same hair, body language, pose, clothing and make-up. This also help suggest that Madonna was inspired by Marliyn Monroe and wanted to keep that particular look alive.

MADONNAMARILYN

MADONNAMARILYN

MADONNAMARILYN

These stills above show the similarities between Monroe and Madonna and also shows how much Madonna look up and made Marilyn her role model and idol.

In other view, looking at these still perhaps Madonna wanted to keep Monroe in the limelight by keeping her image in the public eye so she will never be forgotten.

Music Video History

How times have changed in the music industry

technology, graphics, production and the music

1960s - THE BEATLES

The video above is The Beatles single, A hard day's night. It was released on the 10 July 1964. The first 10 seconds is only the audience reaction of the band. This suggest how popular the band were back in the 1960s and also show us, the viewers, that the band were playing live which shooting the music video.
Even though it was made in the 1960s, the video itself is great because it reflects the band status with their fans and also shows how things could go wrong on stage and reflects real life and how things can go wrong so easily but easy to get back on track. For example 1 minute, 21 seconds when the old man comes up from underneath the stage and Paul and George kick him off but the band carry on and put on as great performance for their audience watching.
The camera is very interesting in this music video. It seems when the band are in the stage, the camera is very steady and calm but while the camera is on the audience, the camera pans and never seems to stop. This could reflect the wildness of the audience because how they are reacting to the band.

1970s -QUEEN

Bohemian Rhapsody was released on 31 October 1975. The video imcluded the band in union which sould suggest the equality between the 4 members in the band.

Then it goes into the band playing live with Freddie Mercury on the keyboard and miming to the song. Since it was in the 1970s and tthe technology wasn't as advanced as it is today, to the viewers watching, it is obvious that Mercury was miming to the song instead of singing live. His lips and and music were not 100% synced to the song. But with John Deacon in the background, playing the guitar creates more of an atmosphere for their audience since it isn't just Mercury just sitting there playing. The atmosphere must feel more like a performance.

After Mercury and Deacon after finish their little performance on the guitar and keyboard, Roger Taylor get introduced playing his instrument (drums) and bring the beat into the song. continues....

Looking back 40 + years, we tell how technologyy has changed and improved over the years.

1980s - THE CLASH

The Clash were an English punk rock band that formed in 1976 and the song 'Should I stay or should I go now is from their album Combat Rock. The song was writen in 1981 and it became the band's only number-one single on the UK singles charts after a decade of its originally released.

Memebers of the band when single was released

  2. Joe Strummer - backing vocuals, lead guitar
  3. Paul Simonon - backing vocals, bass guitar
  4. Topper Headon - drums

  • The 1980s saw the emergence of pop, dance and new wave music.

From then on he has become a successful, business, family man. Williams has sold over 70 million records worldwide, which ranks him among the best- selling music artists worldwide.

Difference compared to the 1980s.

  • The 1990s is where music started to grow as an industry.
  • Popular music in the 1990's saw the continuation of teen pop and dance-pop trends which had emerged in the 1970s and 1980s.
  •  Furthermore, hip hop grew and continued to be highly successful in the decade.

 2010s - ONE DIRECTION

This song was relaesed in late 2012 and eventhough this song was written by Ed Sheeran and Fiona Bevan, it still has over 126 million views on Youtube. This is because od 1D huge success worldwide.

The videos itself is the same pace as the as the song. What I mean by this is the pace of the song is slow and calm compared other One Direction song. It's easy to follow and as an audience you feel perhaps like they can related to it and understnd what the lads are suggesting he the song.

They can give an convincing performacne and this is key to be a great performer or in this case performers.

Naughty Boy

The song was released on 17th May 2013

The narrative of the story is a remake of the story of Wizard of Oz (representation)
The music video deliberately alludes to the story of the Wizard of Oz in an effort to conceal the legend from those unfamiliar with it.’

This music video revolves around a word of mouth Bolivian legend from the 19th century and shows a concerned deaf boy who fled his home since his father was abusive by raising his voice all the time when the child is just sitting innocently by the window...

screen shot

As he walks out the house, he finds a stray dogs that then accompanies him throughout his journey in the song. It shows the relationship build throughout the story and suggest there is always light at the end of the tunnel for everyone.

The narrative then shows the boy living on the streets for a few weeks but then discovers his special talent of perceiving people's troubles, which he can heal by screaming which is said to be as loud as an earthquake and a tornado.

Furthermore, the boy finds an old man who is being stoned by villagers while being taunted and ridiculed. By screaming, the boy resolves the situation and revives the old man's heart.
Together, they meet a disfigured man who was abused, considered a leper by society. The disfigured man reveals that he is a prophet who was cursed by a demon because he didn't worship him, and abandoned the society where the demon resided. The demon is called 'El Tio' and he is considered as the Lord of the underworld, to whom mortal people offer gifts to him in order to be protected by him.

The prophet said anybody who could hear the demon would fall under his control. He told them the demon could be found in desert, where there once was a town in which people worshipped the demon and he cursed them to kill themselves. All together, they go to the place where the demon should reside.
They arrive at a mine where the demon is supposed to be but everybody could be cursed who is able to hear the demonic curses, thus the boy alone only could go to the demon and over voice him with his scream to stop him for cursing others

The video was made in Bolivia, a crowded poor country with need of help.
